Mobile games developer Space Ape has pulled the plug on its Rival Kingdom game which first launched in 2015.

The company took to its support page to say that “Rival Kingdom servers have been permanently closed and the game is no longer accessible.”

While the studio gave no exact reason for sunsetting the game, it shared that “all games have a life cycle, and Rival Kingdoms is no exception. The time has come to lay down our swords and staves and allow our kingdoms to rest.”

Previously the game achieved a million downloads within a week after launch, was the subject of some interesting marketing choices, and grew to great success.

No resurrections this time

In the FAQs section of the support page, the company wrote that there are no plans for a sequel to Rival Kingdoms, no plans to bring the game back in the future and it does not intend to sell the game or transfer it to another company.

“Together, we’ve not only taken on The Ruin but also created lasting friendships, raised money for some amazing charities, and created a virtual world that we can all be proud of. We’re eternally grateful for your years of support and commitment to Rival Kingdoms.”

Space Ape marketing manager Bryan Cindell paid his own respects to Rival Kingdoms, writing in a LinkedIn post: “Rival Kingdoms was more than just a project for me – it was my gateway into the world of working within the games industry, a title that holds a special place in my heart.

“I’m grateful for the incredible team and the vibrant community that brought this game to life. The memories we’ve made and the passion we’ve shared will always be cherished. Thank you to everyone who was a part of this journey.”
